Why Mixed Martial Arts Equipment Is The Best
MMA has changed the form of fighting forever. There is now no one form of fighting like 'Striking' or 'Grappling'. It has been mixed together and the focus is now on blending the styles together. This means that the training equipment has to be the most efficient and of the highest quality to supply this new demand. No matter if you are looking for shorts, pads gloves or bags MMA will have the most flexible design. They will have to withstand strikes, be able to clinch fight and also be used for grappling.

Muay Thai equipment cannot compete with all the different styles which is why people are now opting for the flexibility of mixed martial arts equipment. The good news is that you can still train in individual styles like Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Capoeira etc because the equipment can adapt for all styles. The last point to note is that you still want to shop around to make sure you get the best deals. Many of the major suppliers now offer free delivery which is also a bonus.

Training in martial arts is a great way to keep in shape and to learn how to protect yourself, however you should always put your safety first to make sure you can train at 100% and also train for a long time with no long term damage.

What You Need to Know About Amateur and Professional MMA Gloves

Hours of dedication, proper dieting and exercise are needed if you want to compete in the world of MMA fighting. You must be ready to do your best and be in the best possible shape. You will also need the right type of MMA glove to train with and to fight with depending on skill level and intensity of the competition you're in.

MMA gloves have padding that is designed to protect the hands during the fight, yet still enable one to give a harsh blow to the opponent in the hopes of knocking them out. Typically fight gloves have open palms and fingers that allow for better hand movement. Fighters will not be able to submit their opponent if they are restricted by their gloves.

Fight gloves come in several different varieties that include amateur, pro and regular competition. The main difference between amateur and pro fight gloves is the amount of padding that is used. The type of fighting allowed to amateurs is limited so their fight gloves typically have more padding than the pros as they require more protection and typically weigh in at around six ounces. Therefore, professional MMA fight gloves typically weigh four to five ounces and offer enough padding to protect the hands in competition while also allowing sufficient striking power and mobility.

The padding is usually about a quarter of an inch thick and covers the backhand and knuckles of the hand. It is also important to wrap your hands underneath the glove to provide additional protection to your hands and wrists. Fighting gloves need to be comfortable in how they fit and how secure they will make your wrists and hands feel.

Other types of fight gloves come in a V-shaped design that enables the glove to stay tightly on your hands and provide a comfortable and secure fit. These MMA gloves also have a dual cross directional strap system that supports your wrists and provides great striking performance. Another one of the fighting MMA gloves from a company comes with two patented technologies and are the most advanced fighting MMA gloves in the world market. These professional fight gloves have a triple layer patented Glove Gore Technology with a pneumatic knuckle guard wrapped in neoprene for durability and comfort. These are a top of the line glove for fighting and or training.

MMA gloves for fighting were first mandatory in Japan's Shooto promotion in 1985. Governed by the Shooto Association and the International Shooto Commission, shooto is a type of combat sport with rules similar to other mixed martial arts competitions. MMA gloves were later adopted by the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC as MMA developed into a regulated sport. In these competitions, amateur fighters are required to wear the heavier six ounce MMA training gloves for more protection of the hands and wrists than the four ounce MMA fighting gloves that the professionals can wear. In the United States, additional rules have been introduced into the sport because it is overseen in fashion similar to boxing.

Kenpo Tiger Claw Gloves - Multi Martial Arts Gloves For Multiple Training Situations

In our long term live in multi-martial arts and fitness camps, we use rely on the Kenpo Fighting gloves (as seen by Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon) as our main combat glove. However, we do not call them Kenpo gloves (as we don't practice Kenpo). This is a name seen in martial art supply stores when looking to purchase a pair. Some call them Gladiator gloves. We call them, Tiger Claw gloves as they look like the claw of a tiger.

These gloves are perfect for Multi-Martial Arts training as one pair of gloves can be used in multiple training situations. This is mainly due to its versatility as pointed out below:

01 Open Hand Design for Grabbing

02 Plenty of Padding for Protection

03 Wrist Protection for Weapons Training

Grabbing

The padding is on the top back of the hand but only a piece of thick leather (and in some cases vinyl) is on the palm and under the fingers. Because of this open hand style and design, you can grab quite easily and use them in combat grappling training.

Punching and Sparring

For sparring, they offer enough protection (in combination with headgear) to be used for full contact sparring. Unlike Mixed Martial Art Gloves - Kenpo / Gladiator gloves have padding that fully covers the tops of each finger.

The Kenpo glove is usually made of leather though we have tested out some vinyl versions. Because each finger and thumb fits similar to a glove - these sparring gloves offer more freedom of movement.

The gloves at the wrist have a shoestring style lace option to keep them tight. What we usually do is pre-tie these so that they can be slipped on and off without having to tie them over and over again. You can imagine how hard this is once you have the gloves on - so if you prefer to lace them up tight, you will need to have someone that can tie up the laces for you.

Weapons Training

Next, we do weapons fighting and having wrist and hand protection is important. The thick canvas section that covers the wrist will hold up to strikes from a shinai bamboo sword. And since the gloves are also great for grabbing, you can use them for sword sparring without risking damage to the wrist. For anyone that has spent some time in Kendo or fighting with bamboo swords, you will know the value of finger and wrist protection. Just get a pair of kenpo gloves, a shinai and head gear with face protection and you can play Star Wars Jedi Knights all day long (providing your partner has exactly the same set of gear).

These are the primary gloves for our Martial Arts and Fitness Camps. The reason for this is that they offer the most versatility (weapons training, full contact sparring and grappling without the need to change gloves).

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Madness

While browsing ESPN, you spot what seems like a boxing match, until suddenly opponents start to kick one another. The next thing you know, the two fighters are on the ground, striking one another. Welcome to the exciting and increasingly popular arena of mixed martial arts (also known as MMA). You may think this is the next wave in martial arts entertainment, but this combat sport has actually been around since the Olympic games in 648 BC.

What to Expect During a Match

Mixed martial arts uses three different phases of fighting - stand-up, clinch and ground. Stand-up fighting incorporates boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai. Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, Sambo (from Russia), as well as Judo are used in the clinch phase of fighting. The ground phase of fighting is characterized by Brazilian Jui-Jitsu (focuses on positioning), shoot wrestling, catch wrestling, Judo, as well as Sambo.

Fighting techniques that you may encounter during a MMA competition includes kicks, punches, knees, pinning holds, sweeps, takedowns, throws, some elbowing, as well as hand-to-hand combat. A win is typically awarded through the decision of a judge. Matches are timed, therefore, the decision comes after the allotted time has passed. Other circumstances that end a fight include referee stoppage, fight doctor decision, submission, cornerman throwing in the towel and of course, a knockout.

The Mixed Martial Arts of Today

The kind of fighting techniques associated with the mixed martial arts of today deals with a combination of different professional fighting styles. Most commonly, a fighter started training in one specific arena of fighting and later decided to branch off into other styles of combat. The main styles of fighting include sprawl-and-brawl, clinch-and-pound and ground-and-pound.

Sprawl-and-brawl is a stand-up fighting approach that utilizes striking and purposefully avoids fighting on the ground. This type of fighter usually has a strong background in boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai or karate. To fight in this style, MMA fighters have undergone training in wrestling. Well-known mixed martial artists connected to this approach include Chuck Liddell, Maurice Smith and Phil Barconi.

Clinch-and pound uses clinch fighting tactics characterized by a clinch hold. While a fighter holds an opponent so that they cannot move, they will often strike the body using their knees, or other dirty boxing moves. Most of these fighters started wrestling before incorporating boxing techniques. Don Frye, Dan Henderson and Randy Couture are familiar with this style of fighting.

Ground-and-pound involves the taking down or throwing of an opponent. The next step is to get into the dominant position, attacking with strikes. Wrestlers usually turn to this type of fighting, which has been used by the likes of Mark Coleman, Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz.

Since there are so many different styles of MMA combat associated with mixed martial art, you may think that there is nothing a fighter can do to their opponent. In actuality, there are several fouls connected to this sport. A fighter are not allowed to head-butt, eye gouge, pull the hair, bite, attack the groin or strike the back of the head or kidneys of an opponent.

MMA Organizations

Bringing the exciting world of mixed martial arts fighting to the public are several different organizations that all have their own specific rules and regulations. One of the most well known, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) tests their fighters for steroids and other illegal substances before allowing entrance to one of their championship bouts. In this organization, elbow strikes are allowed with the exception of ones that come from the north-south direction. PRIDE Fighting Championships mainly offer two different MMA weight classes (heavyweight and middleweight) and forbids fighters from intentionally hanging an arm or leg on the ropes.

With the ZST, which is an organization based in Japan, there are two five-minute rounds. At the end of a match, a fight is deemed a draw if there was no knockout (KO), technical knockout (TKO) or Submission. MMA judges are not used in this form of fighting. Shooto is another form of combat fighting that presents separate rules and regulations for three different class levels (A, B, and C). Level C is set aside for the amateurs. Three 4-minute rounds are attached to the International Fight League, which uses a different pair of gloves, offering less padding.

Regardless of where or within which mma organization, mixed martial arts madness is sweeping the globe and is coming to a "cage" near you!
